The Øresund or Öresund Bridge is a combined
two-track rail and four-lane road bridge-tunnel across the Öresund
strait. It is the longest combined road and rail bridge in Europe and
connects the two metropolitan areas of the Öresund Region: the Danish
capital of Copenhagen and the Swedish city of Malmö. The international
European route E20 runs across the bridge and through the tunnel via the
two lane motorway, as does the Öresund Railway Line. The construction
of the Great Belt Fixed Link and the Øresund have connected mainland
Europe to Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia. The bridge was designed by
the Danish architectural practice Dissing+Weitling.
The reason for incurring the additional cost and complexity of building a
tunnel instead of another section of bridge is to avoid obstructing
aircraft from nearby Copenhagen Airport and to provide a clear path for
shipping. The bridge crosses the border between Denmark and Sweden, but
due to the Schengen Agreement and the Nordic Passport Union there are no
passport controls. There are frequent customs checks at the toll booths
for those entering Sweden but not for those entering Denmark.

Painting - Danmark 1989
The Northern Drawbridge to the Citadel in Copenhagen, 1837,
Christen Købke
This view is from the Citadel of Copenhagen towards one of the bridges of the moat. The artist lived with his family in the Citadel until 1833 and this canvas may have been painted as a souvenir for Købke's mother, the first recorded owner of the picture. It was preceded by a detailed drawing and an oil sketch, both of which survive. They show that the artist made slight alterations in the final painting, adding the two soldiers who are shown fishing on the far bank of the moat, and omitting a tree on the right.
Christen Schiellerup Købke (26 May 1810 – 7 February 1848), Danish painter, was born in Copenhagen to Peter Berendt Købke, a baker, and his wife Cecilie Margrete. He was one of 11 children. Købke is one of the best known artists belonging to the Golden Age of Danish Painting.

Puentes de España
The Puente Ingeniero Carlos Fernández Casado -which takes its name
from the construction engineer - spans the Barrios de Luna reservoir, in
the province of Leon. It was built between 1981 and 1983 as part of the
AP-66 or Ruta de la Plata motorway. It is a cable-stayed bridge,
measuring 643 metres long and 22 metres wide, for four lanes, and was
the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world at that time. It has two
towers more than 100 metres high, which open at the bottom. Each tower
has 27 pairs of front cables and 28 pairs of rear cables. The bridge is
divided into three spans, the central span measuring 440 metres and the
two side spans measuring 66 metres. A sliding joint was built into the
central span to absorb expansion movements.
Carlos Fernández Casado (Logroño, 1905- Madrid, 1988) was one of the most prestigious and innovative civil engineers in his profession. From the outset, he specialised in resistant bridge structures, researching new materials in his own laboratory. Professor of Bridges, he examined archives and libraries and travelled the roads of Spain to classify bridges, Roman roadways, aqueducts and other civil engineering works to lay the foundations of the history of engineering.
The Dragon Bridge crosses the river Guadaíra in the town of Alcalá de Guadaíra (Seville). It was built by the Civil Engineers José Luis Manzanares and Íñigo Barahona and opened on the 28th of March 2007. It is 123 metres long, with four spans: 43 metres the two central ones and 18.5 metres the two end ones. It was one of the first figurative bridges in the world and the first in Spain, and it emulates a dragon emerging from the Castillo hill and swimming across the river. Its inspiration comes from the architecture of Antoni Gaudí in Güell Park in Barcelona. The bridge is made of reinforced, pre-stressed concrete covered in "trencadis", a mosaic composed of pieces of ceramic and traditional tiles. It forms part of the Alcalá de Guadaíra bypass.

The Roman bridge in the city of Mérida stands on the Guadiana river as part of the archaeological site of the ancient Augusta Emerita, the name by which the town was known in ancient times. It was built in the 1st century to facilitate communications with Hispania Baetica and give access to the city after the settlement of the Roman legions in town. It is 792 meters
long with 60 round arches and it is considered to be the longest bridge
of antiquity. It is built with a concrete core made of materials from
the river and covered with granite padded blocks. It was originally
divided into three distinct sections. The location where the bridge was
raised was chosen taking into account the lower flow in that part of the
river and because of the fact that the course was divided into two
surges with an island in the middle which served to support the bridge.
Over two thousand years of flooding and overflowing of the river have
led to several restorations although the bridge still keeps its original
construction in the part closest to the city known as the Humilladero.
The souvenir sheet depicts a view of the Roman bridge with its many arches.
The Puente del Pilar, also known as the Iron Bridge crosses over the River Ebro in the city of Zaragoza. It was built in the late 19th century by the Spanish engineering company La Máquina Marítima y Terrestre
specializing in the manufacture of metal bridges in the second half of
the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was one of the first fixed bridges
in Zaragoza since up till then the only fixed bridge in town was the 15th century Puente de Piedra.
In 1991 it underwent a restoration directed by civil engineer Javier
Manterola in which two arched side boards were added for the passage of
vehicles reserving the central platform for pedestrians. The metal
structure was painted in blue and white, the colours chosen in a popular
vote.

The chain bridge at Stádlec
The chain bridge at Stádlec from 1848 was originally built in Podolsko on the Vltava (Moldau) but after the Orlík dam was built it was moved to its present location on the Lužnice and put back into service in 1975. It is the only bridge of its kind in the Czech Republic which has been conserved.

Technical Monuments - Historic bridge in Písek
The Stone Bridge in Písek (also known as the Stag Bridge) is the oldest still-standing stone bridge in Bohemia. The bridge, spanning the Otava river, was the second stone bridge in Bohemia (after the already not existing Judith bridge in Prague). The exact date of its building is unknown, but the style is gothic. It was first mentioned in writing in 1348 when Charles IV ordered the town councilors to use fines collected in the town for the maintenance of the bridge. A couple of gates with towers protected the bridge as well as the present historic town center on either side. The left-hand tower was destroyed by the flood of 1768, and the other one succumbed to wear and tear in 1825. The bridge is adorned by copies of the original, mostly 18th-century baroque sculptures and the Cavalry. The 6.5m wide structure, slightly bulging up the river, consists of six arches spanning 111 meters, built on pillars with an upward save edge. The normal height above the water level is 5.5m. As one of the few medieval bridges, still standing and used in Central Europe, the stone bridge is a unique rarity.

Technical Monuments - Cable-stayed bridge in Ústí nad Labem
Cable-stayed bridge - Mariánský Bridge in Ústí nad Labem, designed by the renowned architecture studio Roman Koucký, is one of the most distinctive and disputed projects built in the post-November 1989 Czech Republic. Following years of lengthy discussions about the location of the bridge, the city councilors decided to place it under the Mariánská Rock, a site best suited for the bridge's main role, i.e. combining the city's three quarters - the city center, Krásné Březno on the left bank and Střekov on the right bank of the Labe river. The 70m high bridge was built from 1993 to 1998 and became the city's new dominant. The height is not the only feature attracting the attention of people: the impossible-to-overlook system of steel cables suspending the 170m long bridge is similarly provoking. The architect designed the number of cables, and the height and shape of the pylon not only with respect to static but also to his artistic visions. For instance, the height of the pylon was to counterbalance the Mariánská Rock on the other side of the river. It also matches the height of the tower of the gothic church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary nearby.
According to the Structural Engineering International (SEI), Quarterly Journal of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), it is one of the ten most beautiful 1990s world buildings. It has also become the most expensive local project in the area of transport infrastructure since 1948, financed by a city. The city had to postpone the project of reconstruction of Mírové Square and other projects. Last year the bridge changed its owners: it has become the property of the Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic since June 26th, 2008.
